Happy Birthday, Mother Mary

The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (her birthday) is celebrated on Sept. 8 each year, nine months after we celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the day Mary herself was conceived. (The Immaculate Conception is often confused with the Annunciation – the occasion on which Mary was visited by the Angel Gabriel and was asked to bear the Son of God.

According to Franciscan Media, St. Anna and her husband, St. Joachim, were unable to conceive a child. They prayed and their prayers were answered when they conceived Mary.

According to The Protoevangelium of James (a pseudepigrapha–not part of scripture, but believed to be written by the apostle James), Anna said: “As the Lord my God lives, if I beget either male or female, I will bring it as a gift to the Lord my God; and it shall minister to Him in holy things all the days of its life. 1 Samuel 1:11

On this day, Sept. 8, 2021, in the Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano, someone brought a birthday balloon bouquet for Mary.

I am hoping to bring more knowledge about the Virgin Mary to the world, especially during these times when we need her most.
