The Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord: March 25

Imagine. If you are woman, just imagine. An angel of the Lord appears before you to tell you that you have been chosen by the Almighty God to be the mother of Jesus, the man who will become the savior of the world.

Sit quietly with that for a moment. Imagine.

And if you’re a man, imagine that your betrothed is that woman.

Most of us first find out we’re going to be parents when the home pregnancy test we take announces we are pregnant. Maybe the stick turns blue. Maybe it says “yes” or “pregnant.” But that moment, the moment we realize we are to be parents, is among the most magical, wondrous, and profound of our lives.

For the Blessed Virgin Mary, that moment changed the course of humanity. She became part of God’s plan for salvation.

Mary could have said no. And there were many good reasons to do so, not the least of which was that she was not yet married. But when the angel Gabriel asked her if she would accept God’s invitation, she replied:

“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

Luke 1: 26-38

Nine months later, on Dec. 25, Jesus was born. It all began with Mary’s yes.

I am hoping to bring more knowledge about the Virgin Mary to the world, especially during these times when we need her most.
