Our heavenly mother, Mary

As Mother’s Day approaches I am missing my own mother, who is now in heaven with my father. This will be the fourth Mother’s Day holiday without her. I can’t help feel an ache as I see all the special cards and gifts dedicated to mothers during every shopping excursion I’ve been on for the past two months.

I miss her every single day.

My own mother was very dedicated to the Blessed Mother. It was through my earthly mother that I learned about our heavenly mother. What a gift she gave me in doing so.

While searching for inspiration on the subject of Our Lady as our heavenly mother, I came upon Jenny Uebbing‘s column on DenverCatholic.org. Though my days as a young mom with two little boys are now a sweet memory (today they are both in their 30s), I can still relate to Uebbing’s own feelings about motherhood.

“In giving life, I have given my own life away,” Uebbing writes honestly in her post titled Mary and the meaning of Mother’s Day.

Uebbing finds inspiration as she ponders the example of Mother Mary’s willing sacrifice as she took on the role of mother, not only for Jesus, but for all of us.

As Uebbing notes, Mary endured many sorrows. Her strength was her perfect faith, an example for all mothers everywhere.

I am hoping to bring more knowledge about the Virgin Mary to the world, especially during these times when we need her most.
