A queen dies; another’s birth is celebrated

Queen Elizabeth II died yesterday, Sept. 8, 2022, at the age of 96. Her passing was mourned around the world, with virtually every media outlet on the planet announcing in its own native language that the beloved monarch was gone. Queen Elizabeth, it seems, was the world’s queen.

September 8 is also the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, the day on which we celebrate the birth of Our Lady, the mother of the savior of the world.

I, like millions of others, watched the coverage of Queen Elizabeth’s passing, which included the rich history of her life in touching photo montages, tributes from dignitaries the world over, flags flying at half mast, and 10 days of planned events, services and speeches deserving of a woman who was much loved and respected.

Throughout the day, I couldn’t help but wonder what would happen if our world came together in the same way in praise of the Blessed Mother’s life and the impact, whether we realize it yet or not, that she has had on every single one of us. She said “yes” to God, and bore the savior that would open the gates of Heaven to all of us.

Add to that, Mary’s work continues even after she left this life. Crowned the Queen of Heaven and Earth, she offers us aid, solace and the promise of eternal life through her son, Jesus.

Queen Elizabeth, as everyone is saying, is now reunited with her husband of 73 years, Prince Philip, who passed in 2021. Had it not been for Mary’s “yes,” her story would have ended differently.

I am hoping to bring more knowledge about the Virgin Mary to the world, especially during these times when we need her most.
